AUGUST 24 – THE BUG JAR, ROCHESTER, NY [SHOW #66]
Day 76. 18,340 miles. “I don’t really know band protocol” Kira told Devin over the phone. We were driving around Rochester, NY in search of a burrito while Devin was on the phone reconnecting with an old friend from his middle school days in Austria who now lives in Rochester. She has been anticipating our arrival and making the most hospitable arrangements for our stay. We met up with her and her boyfriend Joel at a small joint named Sol Burrito for a pre-show meal, where we got to know them and she and Devin caught up on all their years apart.
Then over to the Bug Jar for load-in. We immediately met Nate and Mike from the Pittsburg band Half King who were really nice guys. The Bug Jar is a great club with a colorful décor, artwork lining the walls of the front half where the bar sits underneath two gigantic bugs revolving from a ceiling fan. We chatted with the Bartender, Missy, about vegan/vegetarianism while a Mets/Marlins game played on the overhead television. Outside I swapped stories with the doorman, Lawrence, about touring, bands, and the Rochester scene. We met a very sweet girl named Elise who came with a friend out to see us play. She is a blogger and also plays in a Rochester band called Baby Sharks. She has been a fan of ours for some time and we played Magic Circle Symphony upon her request.
Half King opened the show. The two piece – drums and guitar – played a set of instrumental music that was sort of minimal and slowly psychedelic. Even though the guitar player wore a mask, they weren’t the most interesting band to watch, but their sound made a wonderful soundtrack for the club and they definitely set a cool, comfortable vibe. The next band that played was a local duo named The Poverty Rat (pictured). TPR were actually twin brothers, John on keyboards and Corey on Guitar. There music was fast and epic, it harkened to the videogame soundtracks of Castlevania and Final Fantasy VII. They were very modest guys with a self-deprecating sense of humor, and their music was nothing short of loveable.
