AUGUST 25 – BEACHLAND TAVERN, CLEVELAND, OH [SHOW#67]
Day 77. 18,612 miles. What a city Cleveland is! Walking down the sidewalk along Waterloo I was greeted by the friendliest people sitting out in the sun, coming in and out of shops. I wondered if it had anything to do with the necklace given to me by Liam in Providence, saying it brings good luck, or the Buckeye in my pocket, given to me by Rikky in Brooklyn also for good luck. We browsed through the records and CDs inside the Music Saves record store near the Beachland Tavern, and I wound up inside an art gallery down the street that was showcasing the oil paintings of fantasy artist Chris Seaman, whose work is featured in many Dungeons & Dragons books, playing cards, games and more.
Inside the Tavern we met some of the staff, who all treated us with great humor and hospitality. We set up for a sound check and talked about all things music with the soundman, Dave. Then we were led downstairs to the spacious green room. “This green room is larger than most venues we play,” I said to the on-duty manager, Julius. He laughed. The wonderful kitchen staff prepared a fantastic home-style meal of roast chicken and tofu sloppy joes, with pickled cabbage and potato salad. Most Delicious! We played a game of Euchre and then poked around the attached vintage clothing and record shop that was run by Dave of the band The Very Knees, who we played with in Cleveland a few years ago. It was there that we also ran into our sweet Toledo friend Grace. Patrick bought himself a couple Emmitt Rhodes records for his birthday, and Dave tried on a great-looking grey leather jacket that was sadly out of his budget.
The show was opened by the newly-formed local band Nights, whose showgazer sound was actually very refreshing. Tom, guitarist from Afternoon Naps, was raving about them to me during their set. “They’ve got this great Slow-Dive sound,” he said, “it’s so exciting to me to find a band whose sound I love and they’re from my own town.” Afternoon naps followed with their own brand of sunshine pop. There was an older gentleman there named Jim who brought a small camera set up and was filming each of the performances. He surprised us when he told us that he discovered our band through Amazon.com, and he even brought the copy of our CD that he ordered online for us to sign. Our set was fun, and the Beachland was a terrific space to play. We celebrated after hours at the Broadways bar down the street, a popular saloon frequented by off-duty cops. We kept feeding dollars into the jukebox and danced with our new friends until the early dawn.
