SEPTEMBER 8 – THE SKYLINE, VALPARAISO, IN [SHOW #77]
Day 90.  21,363 miles.  It took us forever to find The Skyline, which in actuality is the basement lounge of a fancy steakhouse called Gaucho’s not in Valparaiso proper, but miles out on the quiet highway near Wheeler, IN.  Knowing that it was this difficult for us to find the venue, we we’re almost certain that no one else would be able to find it, if there were anyone planning on attending this show at all.  When we pulled into the parking lot and stepped out of the van, we were nearly knocked out by the stench of rotting fish coming from the restaurant’s backlot dumpster.  We loaded in through the back door and down the stairs, and every time we came back outside we held our breaths.
The opening Valpo band, Victory Garden, played a set for us, Sam, and a couple other people in the room.  All but one of them split when they finished, and we played our set next.  A brother and sister, celebrating her birthday, came down from the restaurant upstairs and we dedicated a couple songs to her.  Sam closed the evening playing perfect power pop songs from his recently-released CD Keep Careful.  After the show we followed Sam back to his place where we stayed up chatting over some beers.
The word we heard:  “Brian Erlacher is the most overrated player in the history of the NFL” –Michael of Victory Garden
The pets we met:  Molly, Chubby, and other cats and dogs
The pad was rad:  Sam & Patti
The fill of the bill:  Victory Garden, Sam Vicari
David your drink tickets are all mine at The Skyline
Monument / Friends In The Band / Pacific Sunrise / Being Gone / Terminal / By The Wave / Seagull / Some Ordinary Vision / Cognac Dreams / When The World Sleeps
