SEPTEMBER 13 – SOUNDPONY, TULSA, OK [SHOW #82]
Day 96. 22,741 miles. We return to Tulsa’s Soundpony, just six weeks after our first visit on this tour. The first thing we notice upon arrival is the addition of arcade machines, twice as many as before. The Bartender Josh treats us to some drinks and hot dogs, which we garnish with the homemade sauerkraut given to us by a nice young girl in Columbia. We are the only band to play tonight, and the attendance is boosted by the unveiling of a brand new Tron arcade machine, and the flow of people exiting the Big Head Todd & The Monsters concert up the street at Cain’s Ballroom. After I wrote a setlist full of songs we didn’t play in Kansas City, except for Monument, Patrick decides to take it further and write a setlist of other songs from neither of the past two nights. It was an interesting challenge, and a fun show to play. The movie Tron was projected onto the wall behind us while we played, and we saw a handful of familiar faces. We met an enthusiastic guy named Kelly who oversaw the arcade machines and told us all about the independent film he was producing. With no offer of a place to stay, we slept that night on the grass in the backyard of the Soundpony’s pleasant doorman, who didn’t want to bring us inside and disturb his girlfriend. Devin warned us of the rude awakening that was sure to come from the 100-degree sunlight at 7am, but instead we were woken by the rain coming down on us at 6am. We quickly jumped up, grabbed our sleeping bags and ran to the van for a few more hours of uncomfortable sleep.
The jam in the van: Spliffed Out (thanks Jeremy!), The Best Of Jonathan Richman, She & Him, Luna, The Poison Control Center A Good Old-Fashioned Love Story With Lyrics and Everything (a.k.a. the unreleased Bethany album)
The word we heard: “I wanna buy a CD but I only have a dollar. Can I buy you a beer and a shot?” –Kelly
We adore the door: Aaron
Our friend the Bartend: Josh
The pet we met: Meko (4-month old Labrador)
