OCTOBER 8 – THE BEAUTY SHOP, FAIRFIELD, IA [SHOW #98]
Day 121.  28,790 miles.  Our first time to Fairfield, and what a beautiful place it is.  The town is known for being the home of the Maharishi University of Management which utilizes the teachings of Transcendental Meditation.  At first glance it looks like any other small Iowa town: a grassy town square surrounded by old commercial fronts filled with mom & pop shops.  Except these shops are art galleries, natural food stores, Indian restaurants, and all sorts of unique collectable shops.  We walked around a bit gazing into these storefronts.  There was a band playing on the square’s gazebo with handfuls of people hanging around.  We met up with Marc and Angela Hogan at a nearby vegetarian bistro & bookstore.  They came to Fairfield to visit two very nice friends they introduced us to, Bob & Holly, and they all came out to the show.
The Beauty Shop is a show space that is run by Phil and Dom from Utopia Park.  They opened up the place last year and have been hosting an impressive run of shows there.  We heard about the place from Nate Lodgsen who has been bringing Mumford’s to play there.  He has always had the highest praise for it and it is easy to see why.  The entire crowd that came out to the show was very enthusiastic and supportive.  Jonathan and Sonja came down from Iowa City, and the Christopher The Conquered band came from Des Moines to perform.  Their set was incredible.  Christopher’s performance was full of soul, his new Rhodes keyboard sounded great, and the backing band was top notch.  A guy named Jacob opened the show under the name Dugout Canoe – a one-man band that played looped guitar, drums, and vocals to an impressive effect.  We played third to a pumped up dance floor that was jumping, bouncing and gyrating.  Utopia Park closed the night with a spastic rave of dance music, complete with strobe lights, bubbles, and circle dancing.  Afterwards we went out for some late night pizza and ice cream at a place called Torino Steak House.
