OCTOBER 9 – THE DUCK ROOM @ BLUEBERRY HILL, ST. LOUIS, MO [SHOW #99]
Day 122. 29,000 miles. MATT HARNISH 40TH BIRTHDAY BASH!
When we pulled in to the back of Blueberry Hill, we ran into the Birthday Boy, Matt Harnish, dressed in Maroon pants and a Hawaiian shirt. Then Eric Hernandez emerged, who we haven’t seen in a few years, and a stream of hugs were passed around. Eric is from Athens, Georgia, and played an instrumental part in organizing the HHBTM Popfest there for many years. More recently he has been devoting time to his band, Los Meesfits, whom he introduced us to in the back lot. Karen arrived with a cookie cake, and we also met the guys in Warm Jets. They were added to the show at the last minute when the originally scheduled headliner, Thee American Revolution, had to cancel due to Robert Schneider and rest The Apples In Stereo’s concert happening in Brazil.
Our buddy Rob from Mustardfish emceed the show. He was dressed in his usual thick-rimmed glasses, a navy ball cap, and a velvet red smoking jacket. He came out amongst the crowd playing accordion and serenading everyone with a song in French. Then he took center stage with an epic song about how the history of St. Louis rock is centered around Matt Harnish. It was a funny, flattering introduction for Matt’s band Bunnygrunt who busted right into their set. Tonight they are down to the core three piece of Matt, Karen, and of course Eric Von Damage on the drums, and they played bunch of favorites. It was smart that Bunnygrunt played first, because everyone was buying Matt shots throughout the evening and he got hammered pretty quickly. By the time we performed near the end of the evening, he was laying flat on the side of the stage. But Matt wasn’t the only one who was hit pretty hard by the insanely tall shots that the Duck Room was pouring. We played our sloppiest set of the entire tour, and for Patrick (being the DD) it was like an uphill battle to get his band to make it to the end. The jams were slow and loose, and at one point we segued into a tipsy cover of Lou Reed’s “Walk On The Wild Side.” The show was running late so the soundman, Pancho, ordered us to cut the set short, which Patrick said was our saving grace.
