OCTOBER 10 – ABBEY PUB, CHICAGO, IL [SHOW #100]
Day 123.  29,321 miles.  10-10-10.  Back to Chicago for the third time on this trek, today is not only to 100th show but it is also the 4-month anniversary of the beginning of tour.  This time we play the Abbey Pub, where we have played once before opening for Dressy Bessy.  We arrived early from some dinner, courtesy of the promoter Sean.  Then a soundcheck and down into the green room to play some Euchre.
There were quite a few friends in attendance this night.  Sami came from Iowa and Shawn and Emily came down from Grand Rapids, not just to see us but also for the Belle & Sebastian concert happening the next night at the Chicago Theater.  The opening act of the show was by far the youngest band we have played with on this tour.  They were a group of gradeschool students, assembled into a band by their parents and played an impressive set of cover songs.  They were really, really good!  And Patrick even managed to get one of their T-shirts.  Our 100th set was a rockin one, and it felt great to play a tight, blazin’ set after St. Louis’ silly slopfest (quite fun in its own regard…it was less of a show and more of a birthday party).  We even broke our years-long abstinence and succumbed to the requests to play Shabami – our classic dance craze that was sadly left out of the Anniversary show in Ames.
We stayed with Devin’s sister Nicole, who had recently moved back to Chicago from San Jose.  She took us out the next morning for lunch at a nearby restaurant in Greek Town, and we walked around the streets for a bit.  Later that afternoon we paid a visit to our friend’s studio to talk about recording our next record, and we also were privileged enough to get a brief tour of Bob Weston’s mastering studio.  That evening everyone gathered at the Chicago Theater for the Belle & Sebastian show, including Greg & Jill from KC and Bob & Whitney from Des Moines.
The jam in the van:  Leonard Cohen Songs Of Leonard Cohen / The Magnetic Fields 69 Love Songs Vol. 2 / Kate Kennedy Circle, Line, Square / Fiona Apple Tidal / The Beatles / The Kinks
