OCTOBER 16 – LEMON GROVE CAFÉ, YOUNGSTOWN, OH [SHOW #105]
Day 129. 30,418 miles. PCC’s first visit to Youngstown. We arrived at the Lemon Grove Café early where were ordered some sandwiches and played some Euchre while a performer from Minneapolis did an early set of folk tunes. Soon the guys in Hallelujah The Hills arrived, and we had a nice reunion with them. They told us they had spent the entire day killing time in a Barnes & Noble in Rochester, NY while their van was getting fixed (the same “bucking” issue we had with our van this summer, no less). We had once played a show with HTH at the Maintenance Shop back in March of 2008. They did us a nice favor by adding us to tonight’s show on short notice. We set up and played first, a short set to a nice crowd of people that was growing over the course of the night. Met a lot of sweet people, and made some new friends.
We Settled On Land, a synth and guitar-based duo, played second. They had a smooth, atmospheric sound and I recognized an Atlas Sound cover. “I think this is chill-wave music,” I told David. We were sitting together on a couch, he was reading up on the city’s political candidates in a local newspaper and I discovered a skateboard on the floor next to me. Having not learned my lesson after Patrick & Devin’s numerous wipe-outs in Lowell, I grabbed the board and started skating around the café. I’m a little surprised I wasn’t kicked out.
Hallelujah The Hills then took the stage and rocked the place. Their songs are so good and we enjoyed them thoroughly. For the remainder of the evening we were glued to the bar since everyone was buying us fancy local beers. I met the head brewer of Youngstown’s Rusty Brewing Co who bought me one of his stouts. Then I someone brought me a Kentucky Bourbon Ale that was perhaps the most delicious beer I’ve ever had. Went back to the apartment of a friend we made stayed up listening to records on her Califone player.
