The Poison Control Center

OCTOBER 20 – THE BUG JAR, ROCHESTER, NY [SHOW #109]
Day 133.  30,883 miles.  The sunshine and pleasant fall scenery soothed our bittersweet departure from Cleveland.  We have been spending very little time on the road recently, so it was nice to have an afternoon of driving and listen to some music again.  It was reaching dusk as we rolled into Rochester.  We first went to Masha’s place where she was waiting out on the front porch.  It was a bit of a disappointment that we didn’t come to Rochester sooner to have more time to hang out and see more of the city.  Our extended stay in Cleveland was unexpected, but still we have been looking forward to Rochester and we were nonetheless happy to be back.  Masha showed us her apartment inside a large, beautiful house.  We got to meet Jack –her adorable cat, and peruse her book collection.  But time was short and we went dinner at Dog Town for some fancied up hot dogs, chili and fries.
Back at the Bug Jar we were greeted by the same locked door that we met last time.  So much for trying to arrive early.  The bartender let us in and we hung around the place for a while.  Our friend Elise arrived and we had a nice reunion with her.  She saw us play for the first time back in August, and tonight we finally get to see her perform as Baby Shark.  Soon Kira arrived, as well as Masha and their friends Tyler and Emily.  We talked about how recent our last visit seemed (not quite two months ago), which is a feeling we’re getting pretty used to at this point.  Not much has changed at the Bug Jar.  The noticeable difference about tonight is the number of people who turned out for the show – a heavy mix of punks, greasers, hipsters and indie kids.
Heavy stack of acts for this show.  Baby Shark opened the show to a room that was already pretty full.  She played a set of touching, intimate acoustic songs, and the crowd really enjoyed it.  Insubordinates – a punk band with an attitude – played second.  Third was the newly formed pop-punk band Gunner Stahl (pictured).  We met and talked to some of the dudes in that band and they were super nice.  We played fourth and the room was hot and sweaty.  The soundman, Ben, enhanced our set with a frantic lightshow complete with strobes.  We played a set of rockers and crowd-pleasers and the people responded really well.  A bunch of ‘em tore up the dance floor with us during Give It A Try, and the room was chanting along with is during Magic Circle Symphony.  By the end of the set we were drenched in sweat.  Agent Orange headlined the night, and they sounded good and rockin.  We already knew that they were a veteran band, but we did not know that they formed in 1979!  Devin chatted with a couple of them and said they were super nice dudes.  Patrick felt a kinship with them, sensing that they considered us a sort of a fellow veteran band as well.  I met a lot of nice people at the end of the show at the merch table as the crowd was filing out of the club.  Masha was getting tired, and Patrick was in a heated debate with Emily about the greatest music artists, albums, songs, etc.
