OCTOBER 21 – TT THE BEAR’S, CAMBRIDGE, MA [SHOW#110]
Day 134. [DF] “Q: What happens when you take the Freedom Trail backwards? A: You turn British,” Ryan from Hallelujah the Hills joked during our set at TT the Bear’s. I don’t know if we turned British or not, but I got so miserably lost in the mess of Boston roads that I feel confident I took us all on the Freedom Trail once or twice on the way to the venue, maybe forwards, maybe backwards. I had driven the whole way from Rochester, which was rather pleasant, but had forgotten just how chaotic driving in Boston can be. Even our GPS was telling me nonsense. 7 hours of driving and then dealing with winding roads, changing multiple lanes in stalled traffic, missing turns, etc. left my brain a pile of mush. We loaded into the venue and Elio from HtH, a Cambridge resident, helped me park, which was itself no easy task on a Thursday night in Cambridge. I arrived in the venue at last to find my equipment already set up on stage and was told that we were to start the set in five minutes.
We had been added to the bill on the Sunday or Monday preceding the show, so we went on first – before many people had shown up. Played a quick set to a crowd that increased as the set progressed, and spent the remainder of the evening chatting with friends and watching the other bands, all of whom were terrific. By the end of the night, it felt good to have finally played a decent show in Boston on this tour with some other great bands, and are grateful to have been added to the show.
A few highlights that come to mind from the evening: (i) Andy Visser, one of the greatest dudes I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing, drove up from Providence bringing a huge reusable grocery sack filled with an estimated 10 pounds of candy, bags of chips, deluxe mixed nuts, a book of questions, multiple cd’s, and more for our travels. Hell of a dude! We made a lot of friends handing out free candy; (ii) I also made some friends handing out toothpicks (I took a pack of 250 from a Democratic fundraiser in Muncie, IN…it turns out everyone loves a toothpick but doesn’t realize how much they want one until it’s offered to them). It was a pleasurable sight to see three fifths of Mr. Sister (pictured) with toothpicks in their mouths as they set up; (iii) We only received one drink ticket each, but Joe got several free beers and extremely chatty the whole evening. I was not sharing his childlike enthusiasm for life at the moment. “I’m not cranky, I’m just on a different plane than you.”; (iv) Staying with Frank and his fiancé. They have a great place in Jamaica Plain, and always pick up a bunch of snacks and breakfast fix’ns for us, although we never get to actually see them while we’re at their place. Listening to the Byrds on their stereo on a sunny autumn morning just felt right.
