OCTOBER 23 – LIT LOUNGE, NEW YORK, NY [SHOW #111]
Day 136. 31,556 miles. [DF] Woke up and realized that it was still my birthday. As is now something of a custom, we made our way to a bagel joint to begin the day, this time opting for one we haven’t yet tried. Knowing H&H Bagels is one of the classic bagel shops in town, we made our way to H&H Midtown East for a deliclous, savory treat. Patrick, Dave, Alli, and I lounged around Alli’s place for a while, while Joe went to Queens with Kelly, who had flown up for the weekend, to see a theatrical showing of Back to the Future. Dave and I both killed the afternoon taking walks around town.
Our very first show in New York was at the Lit Lounge in 2005 and we hadn’t been back since. Not much has changed in the past 5 years – it’s a cavernous place with treacherous stairs for loading in, and minimal headroom on stage for those of my height. This was our official CMJ show, and so some of the KURE crew from Ames came out, among (presumably) a few other college dj’s from around the country. We went on second and the place was rather packed. Darren Hushak, a friend from Ames who works at KURE and does sound for the Vaudeville Mews (as well as our 2009 80/35 set), was there and took over the sound board for our set, periodically throwing in some delay on vocals and various other effects throughout the set. Our set was rather short, but it was an absolute blast, and great to hang out with so many friends, many of them we had known from Iowa, and many whom we had met earlier this tour. A special thanks to Masha, Eva, and Liam for the birthday shots and brews!
Afterwards, Patrick, Alli, Liam (whom we had first met in Providence prior to his moving to NYC), Johnny (a longtime friend of Alli’s and hilarious dude), and I went across the street to MaryAnne’s for some terrific Mexican food. Patrick bought me this insane 3-part shot (tequila, some sort of alcoholic lime juice, and something resembling a bloody mary). By this point, Dave and Joe had gone their own ways, so Patrick and I loaded the gear out to a busy 2nd Ave. and headed back to Alli’s for another late night of Stella and Mile High Sunrises (i.e. Coors Light with a slice of orange). All in all, a terrific birthday.
