OCTOBER 24 – CAKE SHOP, NEW YORK, NY [SHOW #112]
Day 137. [DF] Being a big fan of Woody Allen, every time we are in New York Patrick talks about wanting to go to Elaine’s for a drink. With not much to do for the afternoon, Patrick, Alli and I walked up to the legendary bar/restaurant, unsure whether we would even be allowed in (being the ragged, unshowered group that we were). Alas, we arrived at 4pm to find that it was closed until 5pm, so we needed another way to kill the time. We decided to take a cab up to Harlem to see the Apollo. It’s located on 125th, so I was pleased that we were able to pass by 125th and Lex and put a little more context to the Velvet Underground’s “I’m Waiting For The Man”. After stopping by the Apollo, we walked through Harlem on our way back to the Upper East Side, seeing a completely different side of New York than we were used to. The brownstone apartment buildings were beautiful, and we witnessed some truly insane behavior – one guy speeding down the sidewalk in an ATV, stopping just in time before it hit a stroller, and another guy speeding down Malcolm X Blvd. doing a wheelie on his motorbike the whole time, and then speeding back down a sidewalk, back into the intersection with his hand out to stop the rest of the traffic. Wandered through Central Park and back to Elaine’s for some drinks while they played the most distracting music selection imaginable (mostly bad smooth jazz).
The line-up at the Cake Shop was curated by Brian from Me and My Arrow, and so featured primarily Minneapolis-area bands. It was good to see so many friends from Minneapolis, as well as Craig and David from Cleveland (who also played an excellent set). All the bands were great, but I felt our set was a bit bland, a bit sloppy. Of the other bands that played, I particularly enjoyed seeing the one-million-member Me and My Arrow again, His Mischief (led by Sheridan from Model Down, a band we played with and befriended in Nashville in 2005), and Craig Ramsey (drummer for the Afternoon Naps, with full band), and the two-piece Fort Wilson Riot.
The fill of the bill: Grant Cutler and the Gorgeous Lords / Craig Ramsey / Fort Wilson Riot / Me and My Arrow / Phantom Tails / His Mischief / Marvin Berry and the New Sound
Some Ordinary Vision / Camille Claudel / A Collage of Impressions / Calling Card / Start the Revolution / Porcelain Brain / Friends in the Band / Monument
