NOVEMBER 1 – CALEDONIA LOUNGE, ATHENS, GA [SHOW #115]
Day 145. 32,738 miles. [JT] Got to spend Halloween in Athens. Having the day off, we set up our instruments in Jason’s Nesmith’s studio and recorded one of our new songs “Porcelain Brain” in the afternoon. Jason engineered the session and everything came together quickly and smoothly with good results. That evening we went out to Chris Yetter & Nikki’s new place for their Halloween party. We saw a number of Athens friends there and met some other nice folks. The stereo was playing some appropriate spooky tunes, the TV was showing Halloween and An American Werewolf in London, and there was a table full of snacks and candies. Nikki had made a red velvet cake shaped like a skull, on the stove was a hot pot of spiked spiced cider, and out back there was a fire pit and a keg of pumpkin ale.
The next day I went out with Kelly, who had came down from Asheville to re-join us, to breakfast at Ike & Jane, where we had bacon-egg-cheese biscuits, coffee, and shared a chocolate-covered red velvet cake doughnut. Delicious! Spent the afternoon hanging around Jason & Kay’s place doing laundry, internet work and some impromptu jamming. We set out for a Mexican dinner at our old Athens favorite – Agua Linda, a.k.a. ‘Mas Chips.’ As we were driving there, we passed by a Golden Pantry gas station on the edge of town with a sign that read: “PINK OTIS IS HERE TRY ONE TODAY.” We all wondered and joked about what it could be. Kelly snapped a photo of it to send to our friends Mike & Chelsea who just last month had a baby boy they named Otis. ‘Mas Chips’ lived up to its nickname. They brought basket after basket of tortilla chips as we waited on our meals, and rolled out a cart from which they served us a variety of salsas.
Later we loaded up our gear and went down to the Caledonia Lounge. This show is our third time playing Caledonia Lounge on this trip, the first venue we’ve hit thrice. Good to see our Athens friends come down, and we had a fun show. The New Sound of Numbers played next. They are sort of an Athens supergroup (seriously, aren’t they all?) featuring Hannah Jones, Vanessa (Pylon), Kay (Casper & The Cookies), John Fernandez (Circulatory System and more), Jeff (We vs. The Shark), and a couple players. Wonderful to finally see them play, and we really enjoyed them. Hannah Weyandt and Jim Hicks brought us freshly-baked loaves of cheddar bread and vegan pumpkin bread. There we hot and sooo delicious! Spent the remainder of our Athens stay hanging with Jason & Kay, reading books, listening to records and watching movies like Popeye, Classic Albums Plastic Ono Band doc, and some weird and terrible documentary about George Harrison’s first US visit when he went to see his sister in Illinois.
