NOVEMBER 5 – MAXINE’S, HOT SPRINGS, AR [SHOW #117]
Day 149.  33,444 miles.  Returning to Maxine’s in Hot Springs for the second time, we almost felt like rock stars with the way that the club rolled out the red carpet for us.  They treated us to some drinks, a fruit & cheese spread, a free dinner courtesy of the in-house chef, Fred, and our own green room space in the upstairs.  The terrific owners, Kevin & Agnes, had all sorts of questions about us opening for Pavement, the shock of it still fresh on their faces.  Pavement’s Kansas City show was the closest the group came to Hot Springs on their reunion tour, so a number of people travelled up to KC to see them, with no idea that we were the opening act.  Andie, the girl who offered us a place to stay after our first Hot Springs show, was one of them.  She told us the story of how she and a girlfriend went to the concert, and before the show began they wondered to each other “who is opening this show.”  And when we took the stage and started playing she saw us and asked herself “who is this band that is playing and how that I know them?”  And then she figured it out.  “Those are the guys that stayed at our place!”  Andie and her husband, Kevin, came back out to Maxine’s that night, though too late to see us.
The other two bands on the bill that night were terrific.  The first, Johnny Rocket, was an acoustic act that played a seated set of original music and some well-chosen cover tunes.  The second band was The Death on Two Wheels (pictured) from Atlanta.  They are a hard-driving rock outfit just setting out on tour.  We swapped some road stories with them in the green room and enjoyed each other’s company.  Our set went pretty fine as usual, but ended with a bomb.  While we were rocking out the finale “When The World Sleeps,” Patrick ran over to Devin and did the old stick-my-head-between-his-legs-and-lift-him-up-on-my-shoulders trick.  It went smooth at first, but then Devin’s head got stuck in the square ceiling grid that was hanging low above the stage, and as Patrick stepped forward, Devin was pinned in the same place, so his body was pulled off of Patrick’s shoulders and he fell right into David’s drumset, spilling drums and cymbals in every direction.  David did everything he could to keep the beat going as he tried to reassemble his kit, even the soundman Jake and one of the guys from The Death on Two Wheels ran up to lend a hand, but it was a loss.  The beat totally fell apart, and the song ended with a strange, syrupy a capella vocal outro by Devin, Patrick and I.
