NOVEMBER 10 – ELBO ROOM, SAN FRANCISCO, CA [SHOW #120]
Day 154. 36,156 miles. [JT] “This will be my sixth time playing San Francisco, and each time it had been at a different venue,” I told the guys as we were entering the city. “What’s your favorite?” Patrick asked me. “I don’t know if I have a favorite. I don’t dislike any of them. They each have their plusses, but I would probably say the Hemlock.” Well I got to add another quality runner to the list when we came to play the Elbo Room. Located right in the mission, Elbo Room is a nice upstairs bar with dim lighting, a great-sounding PA system and good-sized stage. There was a quality drink selection and the folks there treated us very nice. It reminded me of a smaller version of The Parish in Austin. After we loaded our equipment up the stairs we met up with some friends and went out for some Mission burritos. The burritos were good but we got stuffed on them a little too close to showtime. “I puked up some burrito into my mouth and I had to swallow it,” Devin said at the end of our show. I was feeling a little queasy after the set myself, and had to find a place to sit down for a while to let my stomach resettle.
Our friend Masha from Rochester, who definitely has been putting in some travel miles to see our band, happened to be in SF that night. She showed up to the club after an exhaustive interview with Google. I talked at length with Conan Newton, who is a recent fan of ours and plays in a number of bands himself – Replicator, Mount Vicious, Victory and Associates. He is one of the most enthusiastic and supportive people we have met when it comes to bands and live music. He’s been trying unsuccessfully so far to match one of his bands with ours on a bill. “It’s gonna happen. Next time we’ll do it right,” we promised each other.
Conan invited us to come stay at his place that night in Oakland, where he lives with his girlfriend Lindsey. She was listening to some records out of the large stack they acquired at Amoeba Records earlier that day. We talked all things music for while before crashing. The next day Conan took us on a tour around Oakland and Berkley. We got some amazing pizza from Arizmendi in Lakeside. Then we went on up to Berkeley, where we walked through the clouds of marijuana in People’s Park on the way to the Amoeba Records store. Patrick talked himself out of buying the $50 worth of DVDs that he held in his hands, I was too overwhelmed to think of anything I might have wanted, although I was tempted by some Thin Lizzy releases. Conan found a CD of his former band Replicator in the used bin and bought it just to give to us. “I only have one copy of this CD for myself, but I want you guys to have a copy.” What a dude! We walked back to the van singing Thin Lizzy songs and brainstorming an idea of our bands doing a split 7” of TL covers.
