NOVEMBER 12 – SAM BONDS GARAGE, EUGENE, OR [SHOW #122]
Day 156.  36,775 miles.  Long drive from San Jose to Eugene.  Drove through beautiful northern California and the majestic Mount Shasta along I-5.  When we finally reached Eugene it was dark and cold outside.  Sam Bond’s Garage is a wonderful bar/restaurant/live music venue in Eugene.  Inside, it looks sort of like a barn-shaped cabin: it was long and narrow with lofted wood ceilings and all sorts of pop art on the walls.  The box stage was somewhat tight, but just large enough to fit most any group.  And there were tables and chairs everywhere.  We met up with Beth Young, who took an Amtrak train down from Seattle to see us.  We ordered some food and drinks and visited together while the headlining act that night, Hey Marsailles, were tuning and warming up their instruments in the background for so long that it morphed into sort of a pre-show performance as they added instruments including the house piano.  It was actually quite nice.  The guys in Hey Marsailles from Seattle were great dudes and had a great multi-instrumental band.  All the folks working behind the bar were great, and the food there was terrific.  Patrick said he might have had the best meal of the tour – vegan sloppy joes.  Devin had the Portobello sandwich and I had a salad that really hit the spot.
We played the first set and it was fun.  The crowd was very responsive and the mood in the place was high.  We a super friendly fellow named Rudolph who learned of our band that day when his friend played us on her local radio show in promotion of the evening’s show.  We chatted with him and he invited us to stay at his place that evening, where a number of us went back and visited late with our new friends and played with Rudolph’s cats while he cooked up a big pan of pulled pork tacos for everyone.
