NOVEMBER 16 – THE BADLANDER, MISSOULA, MT [SHOW#126]
Day 160. 37,825 miles. Patrick and I got up around 11am to go Liquid Planet – a Missoula coffee shop where we are beginning to feel like regulars. We got caught up on some computer work and did a little last-minute show hunting to see if we could fill this evening’s opening. Patrick brought his guitar to a music shop down the street to get fixed up. Ever since he smacked it against the ceiling in Hot Springs it’s been pretty out of whack. After a few hours I went back to the apartment where Devin was just getting out of the shower and David was still asleep on the couch. “You’re just getting up and around now?” I remarked to Devin. “Why, what time is it?” he asked. “3:30pm.” The three of us took a walk through the chilly drizzle to Bagels On Broadway. They each got bagels and had high praise for them. “Best bagels this side of New York,” Devin said on stage that night. I had a bowl of mushroom barley soup that really hit the spot on a cold day. Patrick met up with us and we went back to the apartment once the bagel shop closed up. Our search for a show was a dead end, and we weren’t sure if we were welcome to stay in Missoula another night. With nowhere to go and no show to play, we sulked in silence.
To break out of our funk, we decided to go find some dinner. Mexican sounded the best to us, and even though we have had bad luck with Missoula’s Mexican food in the past, we were determined to find a winner. Drove across downtown over to the south side of the river, no luck. Then across town, and after scoping out a couple places that were not satisfactory authentic enough (i.e. “mas chips”), we came upon a place. It was just what we were looking for, even though the menu prices had nearly caused us to bail after an uncomfortable few minutes of debate while snaking on mas chips. It was good, and very filling. Patrick got the largest veggie burrito I think I have seen on this entire tour.
Just as we finished dinner and we settling up, we received a message from Mike saying that we could play tonight at The Badlander again. We said sure and we went straight there from the restaurant. It was Tuesday night’s local band night with a free cover. There were two bands scheduled: The Boxcutters and Peoples, but the latter cancelled, so the second slot was given to us. It was a little funny being back at The Badlander a second night in a row, but the turnout this time was decent and was an entirely different crowd than the night before. We messaged our friend Briana that we met the night before, and she came out to watch us again. The boxcutters was a guitar & drums duo, and they played some good bluesy rock. And the two guys, Bill and Abe, were fun dudes. We played second, and had a fun time again. This night, another young man was celebrating his 21st birthday at midnight. When we learned this, Patrick brought the kid on stage to wish him happy birthday and asked him what his favorite band is. “The Strokes,” he said. We looked at each other, knowing that we could not play any Strokes songs. “Who else do you like?” Patrick asked. “I like Weezer.” “Oh, oh I got this,” Devin said and he started into the opening guitar riff of ‘Undone.’ The rest of us joined in, and when none of us could remember the opening lyrics, Patrick busted out a freestyle all about the guy’s birthday and how everyone ought to buy him a shot. It was a hoot, and really got the place going.
After the show wrapped up we were invited to go out to Cooper’s place where they were throwing him a birthday party that was going late into the night. We were tired, but rallied for the party. At the house were some of the people that we’ve gotten to know in Missoula on this 2-day stop, and we met a handful of others still. One guy, Drew, showed us the band’s practice space downstairs, and it reminded us a little bit of our own basement practice spaces in Ames. We got to hang out with Cooper, Chance, and Briana a bit more and eventually went back to Mike’s at 4am to crash.
