FEBRUARY 2 – BOURBON THEATRE, LINCOLN, NE [SHOW #132] (sorry we didn’t blog about NYE, & Ladd’s B-day!)

Never-Ending Tour, Phase II commences.  Welcome back!
Watching the weather forecasts, Joe decided it would not be feasible for him to drive from North Carolina to Iowa on Tuesday as he had initially planned, so we are forced to play our first two shows sans bass player.  On Wednesday, the blizzard passed through, we chose to depart Des Moines early in the afternoon for fear of having travel difficulties.  As it turned out, the roads couldn’t have been clearer and travel more driver-friendly.  Since the end of the first phase of tour, the van has mostly just sat in various garages, undriven.  Interestingly, the part of the van that seems to have suffered to most damage during that time is the volume knob on the stereo.  It’s been increasingly finicky throughout the years – often turning up when you are trying to turn it down – but usually it will settle down and cooperate given continued effort.  Not this time – on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being loudest), this thing was permanently stuck on 15.  So we rolled out of Des Moines listening to Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels at the most amazing, ear-piercing levels imaginable (for a conversion van, anyway).  Oh, and the fan still does not work, meaning there is no hot air circulation in the van.  Our feet were cold.
We pulled up to the Bourbon Theatre and admired seeing our name posted on their beautiful marquee followed by The Wailers directly below it.  Sitting around the public library til it closed and wandering around Recycled Sounds for a bit reminded us of the hurry-up-and-wait aspect of being on the road.  Lacking a fourth euchre player, Dave and I attempted to learn pinochle but ultimately couldn’t figure the game out with the half-informative rules provided in the deck.
This was our third visit to the Bourbon Theatre, and our first time playing the recently-remodeled front room of the theater.  In fact, we were informed that this was the first show that bands performed on the stage.  We all approved of the new set-up.
Shipbuilding Co. played first.  We have been longtime friends of Mike since our tour with Head of Femur and have now been able to see his comparatively new group, Shipbuilding Co., twice as a full band.  We’ve been a fan of their songs since first hearing them, and have been listening to their new cd (out next week!) quite a bit, but we were completely blown away at how good they sounded last night.  Great tunes with the least-predictable chord changes and melodies performed the best we’ve seen.  Dave, Pat, and I looked at each other wondering how we were going to follow their performance with our bass-less set.  We chose to do so by sloppily making our way through some new, never-played-live tunes and more confidently playing some old stand-bys.  It wasn’t our best show, but we’ve played worse first shows of tour.  Irkutsk played last and played a killer set to a sadly-diminishing attendance.
The evening wound down with us drinking wine at Mike’s place ‘til 4am.  The weather was ungodly cold, and there weren’t a ton of people at the show, but we’re glad to be out playing shows again.
