FEBRUARY 3 – THE SLOWDOWN, OMAHA, NE [SHOW #133]
Red wine residue still fresh on our lips, we peeled ourselves off the floor after a mere 4 hours of sleep to get to Omaha and master our new record.  We stopped at a quaint little motherly coffee shop on our way out of town where we listened to the lady behind the counter discuss the merits and demerits of her strongest brews.  Patrick and I settled on the French Roast, David more adventurously opted for the Cowboy Blend, prompting him to request Thin Lizzy’s “Cowboy Song” to start off the drive.  I don’t think the temperature in the van rose about freezing for the entire drive.
As with our last several records, we had Doug VanSloun at Focus Mastering master our new record.  The name is apt; the man is one of the most focused around.  He worked from 10am straight to 8:30pm, taking only very brief breaks here and there.  Not much to report about the process, but I will say that Doug did a hell of a job on the mastering.  Hopefully we’ll be able to get the album out sooner rather than later.
Hurried to the Slowdown, scarfed down some footlong subs as soon as we got there, grabbed some beers and watched Bradley Unit (Brad Turk from Family Unit and Talking Mountain) play a rare solo set.  The songs were terrific, alternating between Omnichord- and guitar-based songs.
We took the stage around 10pm, with three liabilities: we still lacked a bass player, we were all still stuffed from dinner (we were pretty much all out of breath the whole show; we blamed the subs), and Dave didn’t have a drum throne (he used one of the Slowdown’s chairs, making him look like a relaxed high school principal behind the kit).  We decided to keep the show kind of loose by not writing a set-list – something we only did once or twice during the whole first half of tour, which I think led to this being one of my favorite shows to play in quite a while.  People were yelling out song requests, running on stage to sing the lead vocals, and generally just being a great crowd.  It put us all in a good mood.  Then we got in our frigid van and made the late-night drive back to Des Moines.

The jam in the van: Thin Lizzy Jailbreak
