FEBRUARY 4 – THE WHOLE, MINNEAPOLIS, MN [SHOW #140]
[DF] We’ve been getting behind on our blogs and my memory is typically crap, so I’m going to take my best stab at this one.  After doing two shows in Nebraska sans Joe, we were finally able to pick him up in Des Moines after his long drive from his home in North Carolina.  The drive to The Whole (a venue on the University of Minnesota campus) was slightly marred by bad GPS advice and our relative unfamiliarity with the UM campus, but we made it there only a little late, soundchecked, and scarfed down some complimentary chips and pretzel sticks.  Speaking of complimentary, we chatted with the opener Chris Knutsen for a bit and complimented him on his red boots.  Nice dude.  His set consisted almost entirely, if not entirely, of covers of songs by the likes of the Strokes, MGMT, Velvet Underground, and such, some played on guitar, some on ukulele.  Next was Pink Mink, which featured members of the band Ouija Radio.  Chatted with them for a while about a mutual friend, Ken from Boone legends King Kong’s Dick.  Their show was phenomenal.  Dual female vocals on most songs, sounded kind of like the Breeders (I’m told).  Basically they were pure rock and roll and sounded great.
After a successful setlist-less set in Omaha, we decided to do it again in Minneapolis and I think it worked pretty well again.  The show was a lot of fun, played some requests and some new songs and I at one point rudely called Patrick and asshole when he called out one of my songs to play even though it was clearly his turn to sing a song.  In retrospect I feel I erred in failing to maintain my composure.
Drove to Ames after the show since we would have to be up early to play first at the Ames Progressive show the next day, and the fog and frigid temperatures were intense, causing several of the chips in our windshield to expand into a crack roughly 4 feet in length.  It was bound to happen eventually.
Sound Tech we respect:  Joe
The fill of the bill:  Chris Knutsen / Pink Mink
Monument / Some Ordinary Vision / Camille Claudel / Collage of Impressions / When the World Sleeps / Pacific Sunrise / Dracula’s Casket / Friends in the Band / Wake Up, Waco / Being Gone / By The Wave / Porcelain Brain / Give it a Try / Don’t Go / Magic Circle Symphony
