FEBRUARY 10 – CLUB 504, DES MOINES, IA [SHOW #143]
[DF] It’s the night of February 9th and I get word from Patrick that the following night’s show might not be on. Apparently there was some misunderstanding about the date of our show at Club 504, a brand new venue in Des Moines’ East Village, and that the venue only realized a day before the show that we were playing there on February 10, not March 10, as they had believed. We got the situation straightened out so that we still played the show, but this meant there was little promotion for the show beyond what we and the members of Derek Lambert and the Prairie Fires were able to provide. Although the venue holds 800 people, the 50 or so that were there helped fill out the area by the stage and the show ended up turning out well.
Chris Ford (from Christopher the Conquered) played a rare solo set that was terrific, playing several new songs from his upcoming album, which as I understand is all planned out (he had performed the whole thing live at the AP show) but yet to be recorded. He also snuck in a couple delightful Harry Nilsson covers, both from his classic The Point. Derek Lambert and the Prairie Fires – something of a Des Moines supergroup, featuring (in addition to Derek) Dustin Harmsen (pictured) on bass, Elliot Imes on guitar, and Chris Ford on drums – played second. It was only the second show they had ever played as this group but they played flawlessly. Definitely check them out.
Ended the night at the Locust Tap, hanging out with friends until the bar closed. We witnessed the disgusting sight of two older guys feeling up this nasty lady (who was loving it), periodically they would all look at us and smile as if we had some reason to be jealous. At least there was some live Velvet Underground recordings playing on the jukebox.
