FEBRUARY 12 – C-HAUS @ BELOIT COLLEGE, BELOIT, WI [SHOW #145]
[DF] Our third college show of this tour, and even more wild than the Grinnell show. We showed up in Beloit, WI not sure what to do. The place was nice enough, but not a business in sight seemed to be open. We saw Biff, a three-storey tall snowman in downtown built for the Beloit International Film Festival that was about to happen. Stopped at Mr. B’s Café, a very homey little place, where we drank fresh-brewed coffee and played cards, while eating some complimentary home-made donuts. Our friends Daniella and Becky drove down from Madison and stopped by Mr. B’s to hang out a bit before the show.
I was sort of blown away by the Coughy Haus (“C-Haus”) when we first arrived – it looked like the quintessential college campus bar…something that would fit perfectly in any Animal House-esque college blockbuster, but that you sort of find hard to believe exists in real life. Behind the stage was a fireplace sandwiched by two giant murals of a dragon and a unicorn from 1974, and a mantle upon which rested a trophy of a hand holding a mug of beer, some sort of prize for binge drinking from the ‘70s, I suppose.
As with the Grinnell show, people were here to dance (and just as often, to make out with each other in front of the stage). During the first band, So So Radio, huge swaths of people would walk into the place and immediately start freaking out in front of the stage, and then 10 minutes later they would all leave and the place would be half-empty again. This happened repeatedly until the second band, Beloit’s own 10,000 Blades, played, where the place filled up with drunken folks singing along, dancing, whatever. Wild show. We played last to a slightly smaller, but still enthusiastic crowd. After the show we stayed up til god-knows-when hanging out with Sean, Jack, and others drinking New Glarus beers and listening to VU, Rolling Stones, and Sleater-Kinney’s The Woods.
