FEBRUARY 21 – GALAXY HUT, ARLINGTON, VA [SHOW #153]
[JT] Drove to DC today where it was cold and wet. Shawn led us immediately to his favorite all-vegan soul food place Exodus. We have never seen him so delighted as when he was standing at the hot food bar deciding what to order between the vegan mac & cheese, tofu curry, and strip “steak” & gravy with a number of delicious cooked vegetable sides. He loved the place so much that he insisted on buying us all dinner there so that we could experience it, and it was quite amazing food. We chatted with the woman behind the counter for a while as she served up all of our dishes, and she even threw in a few complimentary desserts (blueberry pie and carrot cupcakes!) after Shawn and Patrick mentioned they were both vegan.
Then on to the Galaxy Hut in Arlington, our usual DC-area stop (we still have yet to play DC proper). Once again Julia was working the bar, and the Erik Estrada black velvet painting was still hanging on the kitchen’s back wall. We played a couple of games of euchre to pass the time. We met the guys from Mobius Strip when they showed up to load in. Patrick’s brother Nathan arrived, and we were all silently stunned by how much his friend looked like Rob Lowe. “It’s those eyes, man!” David’s DC friend and Cedar Rapids native Ben Johnson also came to the Hut with a friend and we got to chat with them for a while. Even Shawn’s friend Lisa came to the show having just flown in to DC that evening.
We enjoyed a few pitchers of their wonderful draft beer selection and watched Mobius Strip play the first set. They were just returning from a short tour. We played second and as usual it was a fun, albeit cramped, show in the small 58-capacity Galaxy Hut. “I’m glad I came because I can see now that the place is too small for you guys,” Shawn told us. Outside the sleet was coming down, and we had a slippery load-out. After leaving the GH we had a tricky drive around Arlington-DC trying to keep the fogged up and frosty windshield clear as we drove Lisa home. Finally made it to Ben’s place near Capitol Hill. It was a beautiful home and he told us that the man who invented the brail system once lived there with his blind daughter, who was married in front of the living room window where we were sitting. And currently two senators live directly across the street. Ben treated us to some scotch by the fireside where we relaxed and chatted before hitting the hay.
