FEBRUARY 22 – TWISTED BRANCH TEA BAZAAR, CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA [SHOW #154]
[JT] Had a nice morning getting up and around Ben’s place.  Today is the day Shawn catches a plane to go home to Grand Rapids.  It’s been a fast and fun week with him, and we always love having him along.  But we’ve had a few rough nights of little sleep, and he seemed ready to get back home to his wife and his own bed.  Since tonight’s show in Charlottesville was only a 2-hour drive, we had most of the day to spend in DC.  We first went to a nearby coffee shop to do some work, and then Devin and Dave spent the afternoon exploring the National Gallery of Art, the Botanic Gardens, the Hirshhorn Museum.  Patrick and I, getting wrapped up in work had only time to check out the Post Office inside Union Station.  Still, a wonderful and impressive building.
Stopped at a Guitar Center for supplies on the way out of town.  Devin had a pedal checked out and David found a great deal on some drum heads.  I found and played the most beautiful-sounding Taylor 8-string acoustic baritone guitar.  List price $3199 yowza!  The drive to Charlottesville was dark and rural, but we were excited to find a Sheetz gas station along the way.  Went straight to the Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar upon arrival and loaded in.  I got into a near argument with the barista behind the counter over a soup & salad that I ordered, and once again we met up with Nate from Des Moines who plays drums in the band Hanwell.
We met the guys in the local band, Red Battles, and they were real nice dudes.  We started the night playing to a shy crowd who kept their distance, and kept that distance for the duration of our set.  But Nate was enjoying it and a very nice girl named Denise that hailed from Columbia, SC.  We met Luke, who sang in Red Battles, and his roommate Jon who was very sweet and invited us to crash at their place.  After wrapping up the show and loading out we went down to another bar called C & O where an acoustic gypsy-jazz band was playing some fine music to stomp to in the cozy downstairs bar.  We watched people dance and chatted with Jacob, who is the booker for the Tea Bazaar and some other new friends we made that night.
On to the house, we stayed up drinking wine and making song late-night drone music over the out-of-tune piano and harmonium with guitar and sitar.  Things then progressed to the kitchen, where Devin discovered a bottle of Sriracha hot sauce.  Licking dabs off fingertips turned to group “hot cock” toasts, to full-finger to palmful to finally squirting a 4-second shot into Devin’s mouth straight from the bottle.  One girl there, Michael, almost went for a 5-second shot until Devin recommended otherwise.
