FEBRUARY 23 – THE CAVE, CHAPEL HILL, NC [SHOW #155]
Before we left Charlottesville we stopped at the recommended Bodo’s bagels for some bagels and coffee. It was a beautiful drive through the rural parts of central Virginia on our way down to Chapel Hill. There we met up with Ryan and Jennifer and Sylvie Anderson at Jennifer’s mother’s house. The last time the band saw them was last July when they were still living in Austin, TX. They have since relocated to Asheville, North Carolina with their dog Hattie, not far from Joe and Kelly. We got to meet Jennifer’s grandmother Mary, and snacked on the Chex mix she made while we played and watched TV with Sylvie. Later we went out for some dinner burritos at Carrburrito before heading over to The Cave. Everyone in town is glued to a television for the broadcast of the UNC vs. NC State basketball game. “Beanie Weenie Wednesday” is the free special at the Cave tonight, with the hot Crockpot sitting at the counter.
Our last show at The Cave back in June ’10 was shared with the local 90s cover band The Monument Club, and we became instant fans them and members Tim, Lee, and Joey. Tonight we play with Lee’s new band, Gentle Robot, a three-piece pop rock band. We were wowed by their songs and even the ballsy cover of The Kinks’ “Shangrila.” Tim was at the show too, showing us pictures of his 4-month-old son, Max, with great enthusiasm. Ryan and Jennifer were at the show, and a few other patrons. Near the end of our set The Cave’s owner, Mouse, arrived and really liked us, posing for the camera in front of us while we were playing our last song.
