The Poison Control Center

FEBRUARY 26 – DRUNKEN UNICORN, ATLANTA, GA  [SHOW #158]
[DF]  Kelly, along with us for a couple of days, had managed to score some free tickets to the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga (a pride of the city, it seems), so we took advantage of the fact that we had a short drive to Atlanta by hanging out at the aquarium for a few hours.  I mean, some of the things just looked like your run-of-the-mill fish, but there were so many creatures that were absolutely stunning!  I can’t even begin to comprehend how some of these sea creatures evolved, and how others were so strangely simple (e.g. these long, weird eel-like things with no eyes or legs or anything except a mouth, really).  The seahorses and seadragons and jellyfish were all highlights.  (Give the penguins some more room in there, though!  Come on!)
Ok, so we hit the road for Atlanta and were on schedule to make it to the venue by 7:35pm when, less than a mile from the interstate exit, we get stuck in traffic for an hour and a half.  Absolute nonsense.  We tried to amuse ourselves by hanging out of the window, and got a bit of a chuckle (and fear for humanity) by a truck of folks drinking Michelob Ultra in the lane next to us.  Finally, we made it to the venue at 9:00pm, missing our soundcheck by a good, oh, hour and a half.
Attendance was sparse, but our good friend Mary O came out to the show (possibly our only friend in Atlanta), as well as Brad (drummer for Chattanooga’s Heaven’s Basement).  We watched some of the opening bands’ sets, but the volume was so unbelievably loud that many of us had to spend the sets at the bar in the adjacent room.  After our own set, we were told that the volume was cranked amazingly loud during our set as well – something that is probably not necessary given the trouble our amps give many venues already.  We’re guessing the hike in volume was needed to block out the dance party that kicked in next door towards the beginning of our set.
Winded down the evening at Mary O’s place, discussing the highs and lows of Sloan’s discography and discussing our favorite venues in the eastern US, as she will be booking and embarking upon her first solo tour soon.
