The Poison Control Center

FEBRUARY 28 – CALEDONIA LOUNGE, ATHENS, GA [SHOW #160]
[JT]  We raced ahead of an approaching thunderstorm to get to Athens.  Everyone at work when we got to town, so we layed low at the Ike & Jane coffee and doughnut shop for the afternoon for some doughnuts and a few couple games of euchre.  While we were playing a very nice young man entered the shop with a date.  We was well dressed and very pleasant looking, but was carrying a pistol on his belt, which made us a bit nervous.  He was seated across the room from us, and at one point he overheard Devin singing along to the music that was playing in the background and encouraged him to sing more, and louder.  “Sure, whatever you say, just don’t shoot me!” we joked to ourselves.  When the shop closed up at 5pm we walked across the street for a burrito dinner at our favorite Mexican place in Athens - Agua Linda (known to us as “mas chips”).  Before we ordered I ran back to move the van from the Ike & Jane parking lot to the Agua Linda lot without being noticed by the other three, which made for the perfect “our van got towed again!” prank later on.
Walking out of the restaurant satisfied and stuffed from “mas chips…too mucho!” we saw the dark clouds quickly approaching.  We jumped in the van just as the massive downpour hit.  Chris Yetter sent us a message offering refuge from the rain at his house nearby.  We went over there, running through the rain in his yard up to the front door, as he welcomed us in to relax with some drinks.  We visited with him and Nikki, watched a few things on youtube, and then settled into a screening of the 80s classic Teen Wolf, making sure to point out the open-fly shot in the closing scene.
Then on to the Caledonia Lounge for load-in.  This is our fourth appearance at the Caledonia Lounge during this tour, making it our most-played venue.  We’ve been looking forward to the night’s exciting line-up.  First is the debut of Hug Abuse (pictured) – a new band formed by Keenan Dowers and Mike Turner.  They played a short set: four instrumental songs but we all enjoyed it very much.  Mike was shy to receive compliments, but I think he had a good time.  Second was Andy Gonzales performing once again as Marshmallow Coast, doing five songs on his own, including one from his new album “Juniors and Seniors Strikes Back” that he released that evening.  We played third and had a lot of fun, doing a few fan favorites and some new songs from our upcoming album.  There were a number of younger faces in the crowd that travelled to see us, and they were all very sweet.  One girl, Kimberly, hailed from Des Moines and used to see us play there years ago before we began doing long tours.  The Goons (Joe Rowe, Jim Hicks, and Andy Gonzales) closed the show, and they sounded great.  They played a bunch of songs from their upcoming album and one song even newer.  They were a blast to watch and groove to, and we were surprised to see how much better they’ve gotten since we played with them last summer.  We met one young local named Chris, who is a Goons superfan that works at the local Journey’s shoe store.  “He give the entire band 40% off,” Jim told me, sporting a pair of black sneakers.
