The Poison Control Center

MARCH 8 – ALABAMA MUSIC BOX, MOBILE, AL [SHOW #166]
Didn’t have any shows scheduled for the next week, so on the urging of our Mobile friends we stuck around for the wild Mardi Gras festivities – our first ever Mardi Gras experience!  It began Sunday morning – Joe Cain Day – when we, along with some Mobile friends, trotted over to the Church Street Graveyard to visit his grave.  Rumor was that the Mobile police were guarding to graveyard to prevent people from breaking in, but when we arrived the force appeared to be on an Arby’s lunch break.  One cop was yelling at a woman on the sidewalk to get rid of her open beer bottle.  The woman stopped and downed the beer right in front of him as he continued yelling while emptying his sauce packet on his sandwich.  We walked passed, amazed by the scene, and over to the graveyard.  We hopped over the stone wall and each took whiskey shots over Joe Cain’s grave.  Now we were primed for a day full of festivities.  We then marched down Government Street, which was prepping for the day’s parades, and on to Beinville Square – a downtown park where people where camped out.  There were multiple DJs pumping music, kids and teenagers running around, folks grilling food and drinking beer, and of course the parades circling around the block.  The parades were crazy.  There was float after float all decked out in all sorts of colors and the folks dressed up in costume tossing out beads, moon pies, stuffed animals, Frisbees, and more.  We were surprised to find ourselves screaming and jumping up and down for the cheap plastic trinkets.  In short time we had dozens of beaded necklaces around our necks, ate too many moon pies, and were tossing Frisbees around.  Mobile friends were shouting “All Day!” and we would shout back “Every Day!”  By the time it reached dusk, we were all back at the van taking naps, recharging for the evening’s festivities.
