MARCH 11 – NAKED BEAN CAFÉ, SHREVEPORT, LA [SHOW #168]
[JT] Was able to find another last-minute show in Shreveport on our way to Texas. This time at another coffee shop called the Naked Bean. We showed up around 5 o’clock and spoke with the women working there. The one scheduled band that evening, Vudu Chilies, had already set up all their equipment and instruments on the small stage. We even saw their setlist: two, hour-long sets of classic rock cover songs. The owner, Pam, wasn’t sure where to place us in the bill. She left it up to us to negotiate with the Vudu Chilies, who were nowhere around. So we sat down for a couple of card games to kill time, until we decided to go seek out some dinner. A couple of young girls recommended we go to Mojo’s for a cheap dinner, and we jumped in the van and rolled out. On the way, we came upon a Mexican restaurant in a strip mall and we decided to check it out, thinking it might be a good mas chips place. But as we sat down and plowed through a couple of baskets of chips as we looked over the menu, it became clear that the place was not veggie-friendly nor cheap. But having sort of settled in we decided to press on and order anyway. It was one of the worst dinners we have had on tour.
Back at the Naked Bean, we met the Vudu Chilies. The band was a group of middle-aged men fronted by a young and pregnant lead singer named Melody. It was decided that we would play a short set between their two sets and we would play on their equipment. Their set contained a number of classic rock hits including “Keep on Rocking in the Free World” and “Powder Finger” by Neil Young and “Rock & Roll” by Led Zepplin. We played a handful of songs during their break, and it went fine. Some people seemed amused, and most liked us pretty well. We met a number of nice people that night, from the very young to the elderly. After the show we struck up a conversation with an older gentleman named W. Macaulay Johnson. He is a poet and even recited a few of his works for us, and we were quite charmed by him. Said he had a book published and a CD with his poems set to music. We checked it out online later and it’s really good.
