MARCH 13 – FREEB!RDS WORLD BURRITO, DENTON, TX [SHOW #170]
[JT] Had to head over to a new shopping strip out in front of the new Walmart and Sam’s club at the edge of town for today’s afternoon show. We were to play in front of the giant fireplace in the small courtyard between Freebirds burritos and a mattress store. Our first order of business was to find out whether or not we were to receive complimentary burritos, and we were. David, Devin and I decided to wait until after our set to get our burritos, but Patrick took his right away. The place had four sizes: Hybrid (small), Freebird (regular), Monster (large), and the Super Monster (oversize). Patrick went for the Super Monster and the guy behind the counter making it told him “you know what, today is my last day. I’m gonna make you the biggest burrito I’ve ever made. You’re not going to be able to finish it.” The burrito was massive. It took two tortillas to wrap it all, and it was over a foot long. I checked in on him when he was about halfway through it. “I’m getting full, I don’t think I’ll be able to finish it.” But he pressed on, and we were all amazed when Patrick proceeded to eat the entire thing. “How do you feel?” I asked him as we were setting up to play. “Actually I feel pretty awesome,” he said.
Playing the breezy outside under the overcast sky was nice. Freebirds had a pretty steady stream of customers and there was a good amount of people out to watch the bands. It was a fun afternoon. Eric and Carleen were there, and Cliff and Kelly and Willis Caster came to watch as well. The manager of Freebirds was very nice to us and thanked us for playing. After the show we went back into town to check out the other music happening in the 35 Conferette Festival. We spent some time inside Recycled Books & Music and Eric and I went to a nearby pizza place to play a 2-song Fishboy set. The Festival Headliner was Big Boi. We parked our van on the curbside near the fence and watched the entire show from the roof of our van. We had a good view of the stage and the sound from where we were was just fine.
