MARCH 17 – WATERLOO CYCLES, AUSTIN, TX [SHOW #171]
[JT] Drove down to Austin on Monday for the SXSW Festival. Austin is a crazy party during this 5+ day marathon of music. It’s estimated over 4,000 bands flooded the town during the week to perform in every downtown club, outdoor stage, and hole-in-the-wall space. We had two shows: one at Waterloo Cycles north of downtown, and the other at the Vagabond Super Co-Op where we played back in November. Michael Zaykes, the owner of Waterloo Cycles, hosts a day shows in the front parking lot of his shop every year during SXSW. He invited us to play and it was a fun show. The weather in Austin during the week was fair, but on the afternoon we played the sun was out in full force, bringing in the bright heat. We helped set up the small PA and a nice fellow named Dan from the UK performed a solo set as Withered Hand first. We played second for a good turnout of people, again including many friends who were in town, including our Iowa friends from Utopia Park and Mumford’s. We had a good time playing, and visiting with the folks there, and talking with Michael, who provided a keg of fine beer for the occasion. When the show wrapped up at dinnertime, we walked with Joe’s sister Susy around the corner to have a delicious taco dinner at Torchy’s.
Dinner was a winner: Torchy’s Tacos (thanks John & Patty!)
