MARCH 25 – “EARTH JAM” @ DRAKE UNIVERSITY, DES MOINES, IA [SHOW #179]
[JT]  It was Friday afternoon and we were back in Des Moines to play Drake University’s Earth Jam concert.  Originally planned to be held outside, the show was moved inside the Olmsted Center because of the frigid weather.  We were happy to reunite with Mumford’s and Utopia Park, who had been back in Iowa for a few days since our last show together in Arkansas.  The school had provided sandwich combos to Brass Bed and us, and snacks and treats and refreshments for all the bands.  We sat around the long rectangular table in the designated green room that was all white with a dry-erase board on the wall.  We joked that we felt like we were holding a board meeting.  It was good to see our hometown friends once again, and both of my parents came to see me and watch us play.  Dom opened the show with an energetic Coyote Slingshot set, and then his brother Phil joined him for a Utopia Park set, and the kids were really moving and shaking now to their trademark “sweat power” music.  Mumford’a followed, the band more filled out now that they were back near home off of tour, and they put on a powerful performance.  Brass Bed played fourth and we were really glad to finally put them in front of our beloved Iowa crowd of fans, and people really liked them.  We capped the show, playing a range of songs new and old, a few by request.  Our staple closer turned into a sonic noise jam at the end, which Patrick morphed into a spontaneous cover of Christopher The Conquered’s ‘I’ll Stop Loving You.’
