MARCH 28 – RED ROOSTER COFFEEHOUSE, ABERDEEN, SD [SHOW #182]
[DF] Day 221.  I ate a burrito on our way out of Sioux Falls and fairly promptly passed out in the van, only to awake hours later to the barren sight of snowy tundra as far as the eye can see. After spending a month in the warm South, it was taking us a few days to get re-acclimated to the Midwestern cold, but the snow was a bit of a surprise, although a pleasant one nevertheless.
This was our second time to the Red Rooster in Aberdeen – a rare coffee shop whose shows do not make you feel as though you’re actually in a coffee shop. We played some euchre, perused the collection of used books lining the walls (a particular favorite being a book on American extremes and extremists – pictures of punk rock-looking anarchists holding poodles and whatnot), and admired the dvd case of the newly-released, low-budget written-and-filmed-in-Aberdeen Frieeumftman.
Even though it was a Monday night, there was a good turnout to the show and nearly everyone there was dancing enthusiastically to the bands. As with our first show in Aberdeen, Capture the Plague opened and started the night off with some loud rock-and-roll, beginning with a Jawbreaker cover. Coffee cup in hand, I watched from the back of the audience as something of a mosh pit broke out during the middle of the set. I don’t think I’ve ever really thrown myself into a mosh pit before, and I contemplated for a moment about doing so before deciding instead to continue nursing my Ethiopian Yirgacheffe. Actually, I have no idea what I was actually drinking. But Capture the Plague folks were the perfect way to warm up the crowd on a snowy Monday night. Brass Bed played second and were amazing as always.
We retired for the night at Dan and Angie’s, as we had last time, along with Brass Bed. Typically they have a room set up in their basement for bands to crash in, but the cold weather prompted them to set up mattresses on the main floor of their house instead. Miraculously, they had enough mattresses and couches for all eight of us to sleep on. All sprawled out throughout three separate rooms, the sight of us was not unlike my mental image of the Heaven’s Gate cult. Or summer camp?

The jam in the van:  Mount Righteous Mount Righteous / Radiohead In Rainbows / Queen Classic Queen / Fleetwood Mac Tusk
The joke that was spoke:  “A priest and a rabbi walk into a bar and ask the bartender: ‘Did you hear the one about us?’” –guitarist from Capture The Plague
Dinner was a winner:  Sandwiches, Nachos, Soup & Salads from Red Rooster
We adore the door:  Ron
Sound Tech we respect:  Marcus
Lasta but not leasta the Barista:  Katie
The pad was rad:  Dan & Angie
The fill of the bill:  Capture the Plague / Brass Bed (pictured)
Monument / Some Ordinary Vision / Pacific Sunrise / Porcelain Brain / Being Gone / Magic Circle Symphony / By The Wave / Give It a Try / When the World Sleeps
