MARCH 31 – THE LIFT, DUBUQUE, IA [SHOW #186]
[JT] Day 224. 49,140 miles. After the Daytrotter session, we brought the Brass Bed fellas to a real Iowa treat: Ross’ Restaurant in Bettendorf, home of the Magic Mountain. The Magic Mountain is Ross’ signature plate, which consists of a bed of tost, topped with ground beef, french fries, and topped with melted cheese sauce. Add jalapenos to make it a Mexican Mountain, beef chili to make it a volcano, opions to make it “snow-capped.” They’ve got other variations as well, veggie mountains, morning mountains, etc. The walls were covered with all sorts of articles and humorous signs. Our favorite was a picture of an elderly man named Art Zavicker (93 years young) that read: He survived the Great Depression, the Battle of the Bulge, explosions and car wrecks then in his 90’s he conquered the Magic Mountain. “I heard it was good, I tried it and I ate the whole business.”
Onward to The Lift in Dubuque (formerly The Busted Lift – it must have been fixed) where we and Brass bed played with locals Glimmer Blinkken and Joel, Graham and Dylan’s (of the Teddy Boys) new band. Pat Stolley and friend Eric came up from Davenport, and it was a pretty fun night. There was a crazy dreaded, drugged-out dude named Jimmy Tree there who was there spouting all sorts of nonsense, giving us hugs, swinging from the doorway (see above) and trying to lure us to Madison with promises of DMT.
After the show we drove late to Cedar Rapids to stay at David’s parent’s house for the night. At the very moment we pulled the van up to the curbside in front of their house at 3am, the odometer clicked over to 200,000 miles!
