APRIL 2 – CATHERINE’S, IOWA CITY, IA [SHOW #189]
[JT] Day 226. Played an early-afternoon on the sidewalk outside of Catherine’s in Iowa City, our final appearance of the Mission Creek festival. A good number of non-hungover friends came out to watch as we played a number of acoustic renditions of our catalog. It was a beautiful sunny day and the air was clean. Catherine was super sweet to us as well, offering us filtered water and champagne. Golden Birds played an acoustic set after us, and we loaned them an our acoustic after one of them broke a string. I told them after the performance that our two sets were like a cross-country trip since both of our bands had many songs about U.S. locations.
When we loaded up the van and started to drive away, we spotted Guided By Voices’ Bob Pollard on the sidewalk. We quickly pulled over and ran across the street to him. “Hey Bob,” Patrick yelled, “can we get a picture with you?” He was gracious enough to stop for a moment for a few snaps, and we gushed at him for about thirty seconds. “We are in a band and we play A Salty Salute a lot on tour,” Patrick said. “Well, that’s good,” he said. Not wanting to hold him up any further we said talks and shook hands and got back into the van for Des Moines, giggling at our own star-struckness.
The word we heard: “Well, that’ll get you two pictures” –Bob Pollard, when Patrick told him that Guided By Voices is the greatest rock band of all time
