JUNE 5 – NESTOR TAVERN, FARGO, ND [SHOW #212]
[JT] Summer is here, and it’s here early. As luck would have it we travelled up to North Dakota during this recent heat wave. But even in Fargo the temp is tipping past 90°. It has been a while, but it is once again hot and sticky in the van. With no working A/C, our only relief is to keep the windows open. We’ve been listening to the area radio stations because we’re getting a little tired of all the music on our iPods. The country stations are plentiful in this region, and we heard songs old & new.
This is our third time in Fargo, but our first time playing somewhere other than The Aquarium. This show is at Nestor’s Tavern – a bar/liquor store near downtown. We arrived promptly at 8pm and met the Bartender working inside, who was surprised that a show was happening tonight (always a good sign). There were only a few other folks in the place, which was pretty spacious. We were told to load in our gear and a soundman would be coming shortly. The Bartender noticed that the speakers were missing from their PA system (always a good sign). We then sat down and played some euchre – the kickoff games of the summer season – at a table that had a poster of “Useful Jenkins” glued to the surface. The bar graciously heated up some frozen pizzas while we played, and soon a soundman arrived. We giggled as he walked up to the stage, looked around, and threw up his hands in confusion over the missing PA speakers. He introduced himself and apologized about the lack of attendance, admitting that they were just coming off of two weeks of straight shows.
Soon the local act arrived, and we saw them having a discussion with the soundman. “I’ll bet they’re too young to be in here,” Patrick said to us. They did look young. Then one of them, Scott, came up and introduced himself. He told us that they were allowed to stay and play, but had to leave once they were finished because of their age. “Which sucks,” he said, “because I really wanted to see you guys.” “Well,” we countered, “why don’t we play first, and you guys follow us?” We squared it away with the soundman and it was agreed. So we set up our gear and played a set for the three kids in Remember Me, the Soundman, a girl who was taking pictures, and a few other drunken barflies who walked over to the stage for a while.
After the set we struck up a conversation with an older man named Jeff, who was wearing a coat, and only had one tooth. He was sipping on what looked to be a bloody mary. When we asked him about it, he said “it’s tomato juice, pepper, club soda and lemon juice.” Then he reached in his coat and pulled out a bottle of Minute Maid lemon juice and squeezed a long pour into the glass. “That’s a healthy squirt,” Devin said. “It’s vitamin C…for the smoking,” he replied, “every time you have one cigarette it depletes seventy-five percent of your body’s vitamin C.” He was truly and interesting fellow. He explained to us that he was vegan because “someday there is gonna be a war between humans and all the animals we’ve been experimenting on.”
The word we heard: “I’m not afraid of what’s below. I’m not afraid of what’s below. I’m not afraid of what’s below. I’m not afraid of what’s below. I’m not afraid of what’s below. I’m not afraid of what’s below. I’m not afraid of what’s below. I’m not afraid of what’s below. I’m not afraid of what’s below. I’m not afraid of what’s below.” -Jeff
